MUSINGS MONTHLY WINE TASTING EVENTS

All 2013 Wine Tastings

Wine & Chocolate
February 16, 2013
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Wine & Chocolate
Adventurous chocoholics and lovers of fine wine are invited to join us as we experiment with various wine and chocolate pairings. At this "experimental event" we'll examine different combinations of chocolate and wine to better understand how they can be paired for maximum enjoyment. We will taste a variety of milk and dark chocolate artisanal Candies, Chocolate-covered Strawberries, and Chocolate-Dipped Biscotti, and pair our delicacies with appropriate wines including Port, Sauternes, and Champagne. We'll compare a wine in both its dry-fermented and dessert forms, and see how each pairs with chocolate. Join us for this indulgent experience, and learn how to match the flavors, sweetness, acidity, and texture of wines with chocolate.

Wine Judging
March 23 , 2013
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Wine Judging
I have written about how being a judge differs from being a critic, the former stressing objective analysis and the suppression of any personal bias to provide a neutral assessment of what’s in the glass. The art of judging wines depends heavily on the utilization of a structured framework and technique along with a practiced palate. While I won’t be able to make everyone who attends this class an expert wine judge, it is my hope to be able to provide the tools and guidance to begin the journey. At this event we will taste several wines, red and white from a variety of regions, grapes and price points in a blind simulation of a wine competition. At the conclusion we will compare our results with those of both professional judges and critics to see how we did.

Old World vs.
New World

April 13 , 2013
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Old World vs. New World
Wine making got its start in the Old World vineyards of Europe, some of which chart their beginnings back to the 1st century. Wine making countries like France have been the standard-bearer for these Old World bastions of wine. With the migration of Europeans across the globe, wine as a function of their many cultures followed them to their new homes. The result has created an interesting phenomenon, with distinct differences arising between wines made in the Old World and those made in the New World. At this event we will taste a number of wines from both well-known Old World and New World regions in a comparative analysis. We will also serve a collection of artisanal cheeses from both Old World and New World producers to complement the experience.

Napa vs. Bordeaux Shootout V
May 11, 2013
Time: 2:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Napa vs. Bordeaus Shootout V
Back in 2004, we conducted a simulation of the famous 1976 tasting that pitted Cabernet-based wines from Napa Valley against the some of the best that Bordeaux had to offer. In 2007, 2009 and 2011 we again reprised the famous standoff. Popular demand has brought this event back to Musings, so once again we will put these two regions to the test. At this event we will taste at least six wines in a reenactment of the historic 1976 tasting. Of course, the wines will be from more recent vintages, but the experience should be quite similar.

Summer Sippers
June 15, 2013
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Summer Sippers
Summer is a time for easy drinking, high-value wines that require very little thought or demand even less contemplation. The wines of summer should be light and refreshing, pairing well with the usually light repasts or foods from the grill. At this event we will examine several wines, both white and red that are light, refreshing and represent good value.

Eastern European Wines
September 14 , 2013
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Eastern European Wines
For decades the wine producing countries in Eastern Europe were relegated to the “junk bin” of the wine world. Soviet control ensured that no one would ever want to drink the wines from these oft-heralded regions. With the fall of the Soviet Union, new life was breathed into the regions of Eastern Europe. It took time for the best producers to rise above the rest and for distribution channels to work reliably. While there has been many requests for this tasting over the last five years, the availability of truly worthy wines was scant at best. Now that the wines are more present in the supply chain, it became time to finally kick off our analysis of Eastern European wines. At this event we will taste a number of wines from various regions in Eastern Europe. Some varieties may ne familiar, others may be impossible to pronounce. We will also serve a collection of artisanal cheeses and breads to complement the wines.

The Lost Bottle
October 19 , 2013
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

The Lost Bottle
Collecting wine is one of the most fun and rewarding pastimes a person can pursue, but it is not without risk. I don’t mean the risk of buying bottles you don’t like, or that are flawed. I mean buying wine that gets lost over time and when it’s found, the wine has become a mere shadow of its former self. And for every lost bottle that dies a slow and lonely death, there is the lost bottle that unexpectedly evolves into a veritable Monarch butterfly – beauty, grace and elegance. The bigger the collection the higher the probability that you will find these lost bottles – trust me, I can speak from experience, which is exactly what this tasting is all about. In a recent cleanup of the cellar, we uncovered a treasure trove of lost bottles. We fully expect that some of these wines will be absolute gems and some, well, will not be absolute gems. In the true spirit of education we put forth these lost bottles for your tasting pleasure. We will also serve a collection of artisanal cheeses and breads to complement the wines.

German & Austrian Wines
November 16, 2013
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

German & Austrian Wines
Germany has a centuries-old winemaking tradition that produces magnificent wines that are often misunderstood. Some of the misunderstanding comes from the hard-to-read wine labels and highly-complex wine laws, as well as bad memories of the cloyingly sweet Liebfraumilches Blue Nun and BlackTower. Autrian wine has not faired much better, mired in scandal in the mid-1980’s and making a comeback with a grape that no one ever heard of (Grüner Veltliner). At this event we will taste a number of German and Austrian wines that represent some of the finest wine produced today and we will (hopefully) clear up some of the confusion and misgivings that shroud these great winemaking regions.

Fortified Wines
December 14, 2013
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Fortified Wines
Much fortified wine was born out of a need to preserve fragile wines on long voyages over land and sea. The presence of alcohol in excess of 15% by volume has a preservative effect on wine. Often sweet, but not always so, fortified wine is usually reserved for after dinner, where it is the accompaniment to dessert or cheese. At this event we will taste many fortified wines from a variety of regions and styles, both sweet and dry. We will also have a selection of artisanal cheeses, breads and chocolates to complement the wines.
