Wines of Bordeaux
March 29, 2008
Time: 3:00pm

Wines of Bordeaux
If France is considered the most important wine making country, then Bordeaux is arguably the most important wine making region. Bordeaux has a long history of fine wine production, using some of the most well-known and well-loved grapes – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc for red, along with Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon for white. Home to some of the most sought-after wines and the benchmark against all others are judged; Bordeaux is both loved and sometimes hated (for their cost and their arrogance) by wine lovers. At this event we will examine several wines from Bordeaux, red and white in all price ranges that are available locally.

Scotch Whiskey
Whisky (Scottish), or whiskey (Irish), refers to a broad category of alcoholic beverages that are distilled from fermented grain mash and aged in wooden casks (generally oak). Different grains are used for different varieties, including: barley, malted barley, rye, malted rye, wheat, and maize (corn). Whisky derives from the Gaelic word for "water" (uisce or uisge), and is called in full uisge-beatha (Scotish) or uisce beatha (Irish). The full term means “Water of Life” and it is related to the Latin aqua vitae, also meaning "water of life.” The term is always Scotch whisky, and Irish whiskey. At this event we will examine several Scotches in a broad range of styles and price ranges.

Non-Vinifera Wines
May 10 , 2008
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Non-Vinifera Wines
For centuries, fine wine has been a product of the “noble” grape varieties, all stemming from the family of grapes called vitis vinifera. Wines made from vinifera grapes have set the standard by which all other wines are judged, but with improved technology in both the vineyard and the wine cellar, non-vinifera and hybrid varieties are making fine wines of distinction. At this event we will taste several wines made from non-vinifera varietals from a number of regions. The wines will be a delicious departure from the usual “suspects.

At that time we tasted a number of wines from the near perfect 1998 vintage. Australia traces its wine making history back to the early 19th century, although it has really been the last thirty years that have put Australia on the global wine map. Many folks only know Aussie wines because of the cute animal labels that seem to proliferate wine shop shelves today. While many of these wines are fun, accessible quaffers, Australia has much more to offer the thirsty wine enthusiast. At this event we will examine several wines from a number of regions of Australia, focusing on high-quality wines that offer regional distinctiveness and good value.
