MUSINGS MONTHLY WINE TASTING EVENTS

OUR FEATURED EVENT

Orin Swift Tasting
Saturday, July 20, 2019
Time: 3:00 pm
Location: Wrentham, MA
I usually don't schedule wine tastings into the Summer because enrollments tend to be lower due to vacations, etc. However, I had the recent good fortune to be invited to a very private tasting of some spectacular wines and I feel compelled to curate a tasting of the selection.

Studies indicate that 87% of all wine is purchased because of the label. Unfortunately, not all the wine lives up to the "promise" of the label and in many cases, the wines are bland, uninteresting and without any redeeming character. The good thing is that there are exceptions to every rule.

Orin Swift Cellars is a producer that scores exceptionally high on both labels and wine! Founded in 1998, Orin Swift Cellars has always specialized in labels, and wines with a story - sometimes provocative, always intriguing, both the labels and wines fit together to form a beautiful and lasting whole.

With their tasting room in St. Helena, California, Orin Swift is at the epicenter of fine wine in the US and yet, their wines pay homage to grapes from all around California. Production focuses on small lots of exceptional fruit, combined in artful blends that play on the palate and evoke imagery as tempting as the label.

At this event, we will sample a cross-section of wines. Beginning with the perfumed and seductive Mannequin, a Chardonnay that is teamed with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscat to create a true synergistic white, and progressing through an evolving set of red wines, finally culminating in the Mercury Head, a massive Cabernet Sauvignon that commands attention and demands reflection.

You do not want to miss this opportunity to taste some incredible wines while taking in visually stimulating labels and being entertained by some of the most interesting stories in wine today.

As usual, we will serve a selection of artisanal cheeses and breads with the wines.

The cost: $85
Location: Wrentham, Massachusetts

2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Saturday, September 14, 2019
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape
In the heart of the Southern Rhone lies the fabled region of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. A region of long-standing history that produces one of the most delicious red wines drunk today. A small amount of white wine is produced here as well, but the region is defined by the gutsy, long aging reds with the Papal crest embossed on the bottle. For the several decades, Chateauneuf has enjoyed a string of spectacular vintages, with a few considered historic - 1998, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2015 and the most recent, 2016. At this event we will discover the wines of the 2016 vintage and assess for ourselves whether it is worthy of the near-100-point score it has received. Along with several superb 2016 wines, we will also share in a selection of artisanal cheeses and breads.

Fortified Wines
Saturday, December 14, 2019
Time: 3:00pm
Location: Wrentham, MA

Fortified Wines
Much fortified wine was born out of a need to preserve fragile wines on long voyages over land and sea. The presence of alcohol in excess of 15% by volume has a preservative effect on wine. Often sweet, but not always so, fortified wine is usually reserved for after dinner, where it is the accompaniment to dessert or cheese. At this event we will discover many fortified wines from a variety of regions and styles, both sweet and dry. We will also have a selection of artisanal cheeses, breads and chocolates to complement the wines.

The cost: $85
Location: Wrentham, Massachusetts
